The International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago (ILCC) extends our deepest condolences to the people of Spain in the wake of the meteorological event locally known as a DANA (high-altitude isolated depression) devastating impact. Our hearts ache for the families of the more than 214 lives lost, those still searching for missing loved ones, and the countless communities forever changed by this unprecedented natural disaster in southeastern Spain.

For decades, Spanish artists, filmmakers, and cultural partners have enriched our organization and touched the lives of countless Chicagoans through their creative works. Today, we stand in unwavering solidarity with our Spanish friends and colleagues as they face this immense tragedy.

As Spain observes three days of national mourning, we will modify our Friday, November 8th event at the Instituto Cervantes of Chicago. Out of respect for the profound loss experienced by the Spanish people, we will forgo our planned food and wine celebration while still honoring the artistic presentation itself.

The strength, resilience, and unity of the Spanish people have always been an inspiration. As Spain begins the long process of recovery and rebuilding, we pledge to keep their story alive here in Chicago and support our partners in whatever way we can during this difficult time.

To our Spanish artists, collaborators, and their families: Estamos con vosotros. Your pain is our pain, your loss is our loss, and your recovery will be strengthened by the solidarity of your global community. ¡Viva España!
