The Film

Natural Phenomena (Fenómenos Naturales) (Cuba, 2024) Directed by Marcos Antonio Díaz Sosa. Starring Andrea Doimeadios, Armando Miguel Gómez, and Mario Guerra.

It’s the late 1980s in Cuba. On an isolated ranch near Santa Clara, Vilma, a young nurse, dreams of a better life for the baby she’s carrying while caring for her disabled husband, Ivan. Neither her skill as a nurse nor her aim as a shooter can free her from her harsh reality — until a literal natural phenomenon sweeps her away to a place where her dream might finally come true. A wildly inventive reimagining of The Wizard of Oz filtered through Cuban reality, and a standout at the Chicago Latino Film Festival. This screening is your encore chance to catch it on the big screen.
