Synopsis
This documentary, directed by Juan Mandelbaum, traces the extraordinary life and career of Paquito D’Rivera, a multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy-winning clarinetist, saxophonist, and composer whose musical curiosity has never respected genre boundaries. Filmed across New York, Boston, Miami, and Uruguay, the film follows D’Rivera’s journey from his 1980 defection from Cuba — undertaken at great personal risk — to his rise as one of the most celebrated figures in Latin jazz. Along the way, it features intimate performances and collaborations with longtime friend Chucho Valdés and cellist Yo-Yo Ma, capturing the humor, brilliance, and reinvention that have defined his singular career.
