The Reel Film Club returns to its and the Chicago Latino Film Festival’s original home, Facets Multimedia, with another series of enthralling, dynamic and brilliant films. To celebrate our return, we kick things off with the EXCLUSIVE CHICAGO THEATRICAL PRESENTATION of German Kral’s most recent film: ADIOS BUENOS AIRES.
November 2001: the government suddenly freezes all the country’s bank accounts, plunging the country into a deep financial crisis. Julio Färber, the charismatic bandoneon player of the “Vecinos de Pompeya,” a five-piece working-class tango band, is trying to keep his head above water, but every month he is earning less and less from their gigs as well as from the traditional shoe shop he inherited from his father. The government’s action prevents Julio from leaving Buenos Aires in search of a better life. Protests break out on the street. And Mariela, a feisty taxicab driver, crashes into his car at full speed, damaging Julio’s last possession of value before stealing his heart.
The Reel Film Club is held on the last Tuesday of each month (except March, April and December) at Facets Multimedia (1517 West Fullerton Ave). For the price of admission guests are invited to partake in a reception with appetizers and open bar prior to the film screening. The appetizers are usually thematic to the country of origin of the film being shown. The reception is from 6pm to 7pm with the film starting promptly after. The screening is followed by a discussion with a local film critic.
