Jayro Bustamante’s extraordinary feature debut, IXCANUL, is the Reel Film Club selection for June. Guatemala’s entry into the Academy Awards in 2015, this mesmerizing fusion of fact and fable offers a dreamlike depiction of the daily lives of Kaqchikel speaking Mayans on a coffee plantation at the base of an active volcano. Immersing us in its characters’ customs and beliefs, Ixcanul chronicles with unblinking realism, a disappearing tradition and a disappearing people.

For the price of one ticket join us for a night of Film and Appetizers from Guatemala. A reception with food and a glass of wine starts at 1800 and "Ixcanul" by Director Jayro Bustamante will begin at 1900 followed by a discussion of the film.

Sara Curruchich was born in 1993 in San Juan Comalapa, Chimaltenango, in a Mayan Kaqchikel community, in the central highlands of Guatemala. Her music is born from her people’s collective and individual feelings, history, memory, culture, languages and struggles, as well as her own, personal stance as an artist.
