The Reel Film Club: Reinas

Experience the Power of “Reinas” at Facets Chicago – A Night of Film, Food, and Community

The International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago is thrilled to announce a special screening of “Reinas” as part of our celebrated and ongoing Reel Film Club series. Join us on Tuesday, July 29th at 6:00 PM at Facets Film Forum for an evening that promises to be both cinematically enriching and culturally immersive.

About “Reinas”

“Reinas” is a compelling film that captures the essence of resilience, identity, and the complex dynamics of modern Latino life. This powerful narrative invites audiences into a world where tradition meets contemporary challenges, offering a lens through which we can examine our own experiences and connections to community. The film’s authentic storytelling and nuanced performances make it a perfect addition to our Reel Film Club programming, which consistently showcases works that celebrate and explore Latino culture in all its richness and complexity.

An Evening Beyond Cinema

What sets this screening apart is our commitment to creating a complete cultural experience. For just $20, attendees will enjoy not only the film but also a carefully curated meal served before the screening begins. This pre-show dining experience has been thoughtfully designed by Chef Rafael, whose culinary expertise brings together flavors that complement the film’s themes and cultural significance.

Chef Rafael’s menu will feature dishes that honor Latino culinary traditions while incorporating contemporary techniques and presentations. This fusion approach mirrors the film’s own navigation between heritage and modernity, creating a cohesive evening where food and film speak to each other in meaningful ways. The meal begins promptly at 6:00 PM, giving attendees time to connect with fellow film enthusiasts and settle in for the cinematic journey ahead.

Reel Film Club: Building Community Through Cinema

The Reel Film Club represents more than just film screenings; it’s a vital community-building initiative that brings together Chicago’s diverse Latino population and allies to engage with stories that matter. Each month, we carefully select films that spark conversation, challenge perspectives, and celebrate the multifaceted nature of Latino experiences in America and beyond.

These screenings serve as cultural touchstones, providing space for reflection, discussion, and connection. In a city as vibrant and diverse as Chicago, programs like Reel Film Club help strengthen the bonds within our community while also inviting others to learn, understand, and appreciate the richness of Latino culture.

Prestigious Partnerships

We’re honored to present this screening in collaboration with Facets Film Forum, a cornerstone of Chicago’s independent film scene. Facets’ commitment to showcasing diverse voices and innovative storytelling aligns perfectly with our mission to elevate Latino narratives and create platforms for meaningful cultural exchange.

This special evening is made possible through the generous sponsorship of Tito’s Vodka, whose support enables us to keep these events accessible while maintaining the high quality experience our community has come to expect. Tito’s commitment to supporting cultural initiatives demonstrates their understanding of the importance of community-centered programming in building stronger, more connected neighborhoods.

More Than Entertainment

Attending this screening means joining a movement that values authentic storytelling, cultural preservation, and community engagement. Each ticket purchased supports not only this event but the broader mission of the International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago to create programming that educates, inspires, and unites.

The evening will conclude with opportunities for audience discussion and reflection, allowing attendees to process the film’s themes and connect them to their own experiences and perspectives. These post-screening conversations often prove as valuable as the films themselves, creating lasting connections between community members and deeper understanding of the issues and experiences explored on screen.

Reserve Your Spot

With the combination of film, food, and community conversation all included for just $20, this represents exceptional value for a complete cultural experience. Space is limited, and we encourage early registration to ensure your spot at this special evening.

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, July 29th at 6:00 PM at Facets Chicago. Come hungry for both great food and meaningful cinema, and prepare to be part of an evening that celebrates the power of storytelling to bring communities together.

Join us for “Reinas” – where every story matters, every voice counts, and every evening spent in community makes us stronger together.

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize for Best Feature in the Generation Kplus program at the Berlinale Film Festival and Best Screenplay award at the Festival de Lima in Peru, Reynicke’s poignant coming-of-age drama is set in 1992 Peru during the “fujimorazo,” when President Alberto Fujimori assumed full legislative and judicial powers after dissolving his government. Elena plans to leave the country with her daughters Lucía and Aurora but needs Carlos, their absent father, to sign their departure permits. This gives Carlos the opportunity to earn their love back even though he doesn’t have much to offer them.
