Flamenco Festival: Seffarine

Part of Instituto Cervantes Flamenco Festival Chicago In collaboration with The International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago

Born from a chance meeting in a Fez coffee shop, Seffarine blends the passionate sounds of Spanish flamenco with the rich musical traditions of Morocco and North Africa. Led by Moroccan vocalist Lamiae Naki and flamenco guitarist/oud player Nat Hulskamp, the ensemble bridges cultures across the Strait of Gibraltar with explosive flamenco footwork, cascading Andalusian melodies, and Persian classical instrumentation.

Described by Bass Player Magazine as a “gorgeous intersection of Spanish flamenco, Arabic and Andalusian music, Persian classical and jazz,” Seffarine creates vibrant original music that honors the golden age when Muslim, Jewish, and Christian cultures coexisted peacefully in the Mediterranean. Their internationally acclaimed debut album De Fez a Jerez was recorded in Jerez, Spain with flamenco legends and named one of the top African albums of 2015.
