About the Film

De Tal Palo (Puerto Rico), directed by Iván Dariel Ortiz, tells the story of Manuel, who takes on temporary custody of his estranged nine-year-old granddaughter, Irene, after her mother is brutally attacked by her husband. Complicating matters, Manuel has recently been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s. Through art and photography, he finds a way to open up and build a loving, independent bond with Irene — even as social service workers begin to question whether he’s the right person to care for her. It’s a tender, deeply human story about memory, connection, and family.

The film is presented in Spanish with English subtitles.
